FORTIDRILL®
A unique alternative to hydrocarbon-based drilling fluids.
A highly effective water-based inhibitive drilling fluid system for drilling reactive clay formations. An environmentally and economically viable alternative to oil-based muds (OBMs).
Drilled cuttings of highly active gray clay from a depth of 2200 m. Western Kazakhstan.
An effective solution to issues such as: bit not reaching the bottom of the well, borehole wall collapse, hole narrowing, inability to run casing due to insufficient inhibition of the drilling fluid — all of which can lead to increased drilling time, significant cost overruns, and even loss of the well.
Organic Inhibitor FORTIHIB
  • Synergistic effect with sodium chloride
  • Suppresses the ability of clay to absorb water
  • Unlike KCl, inhibits clays regardless of their mineralogical composition, including kaolinite
  • Does not interfere with geophysical instrument readings
  • Has an anticorrosion effect
Сравнение изменения реологических свойств растворов в зависимости от количества введенного монтмориллонита
Amino-Type Clay Swelling Inhibitor
Designed to inhibit hydration and swelling of clays and clay shales during drilling and well construction operations.
Advantages of Use
  • Reduces clay content buildup in drilling fluid (MVT test)
  • Prevents cavern formation on wellbore walls
  • Decreases the likelihood of pack-off formation
  • Compatible with most water-based drilling fluid systems
Application Method
The product is supplied ready-to-use and requires no additional preparation before adding to the drilling fluid.
Recommended dosage is from 5 to 30 kg/m³ of drilling fluid.

Technical Specifications:
Evaluation of Drilling Fluid Efficiency (Conditional Clay Absorption Capacity)
Change in dynamic shear stress with the amount of montmorillonite added to fresh water
Laboratory Studies and Conclusions
The FORTIDRILL system is based on the use of a new polyamine inhibitor, FORTIHIB.
According to numerous laboratory tests and comparisons with existing drilling fluid systems, as well as new developments from leading Western companies, the following conclusions have been made about the FORTIDRILL system:
  • It exhibits high clay absorption capacity.
  • It can be used in both fresh water and high-mineralization systems.
  • It outperforms KCl/polymer systems on many parameters.
  • Its effectiveness is comparable to oil-based muds (OBMs).
Conducted Studies
  • Impact on drilling fluid properties
  • Study of clay particle stability
  • Testing for overall strength
  • Pack-off formation
  • Linear swelling
  • Determination of maximum clay absorption capacity
  • Anticorrosion properties
To activate the inhibiting properties, the system requires the presence of chlorides, regardless of the specific type of chloride salt used.
This provides a significant cost advantage, as it allows the use of sodium chloride instead of the more expensive and scarce potassium chloride.
